The free website that you may be maintaining to promote your hobby or interest could be turned into a generator of extra revenue.
There are several ways that you can turn a free hobby or interest website or blog into one that makes a little extra money. You probably won’t get rich doing this but you may cover the expenses of creating and maintain the site.
The most obvious way to monetize your site is with Google AdSense, AdSense is a program that will put advertising related to your site’s topic on your site. You get paid every time a visitor to your site clicks on one of the ads. It’s real easy to do plus it’s quick and even a novice can do it. Better yet Google, has a number of other advertising programs and tools available to enhance your site’s money making potential. Google now offers a number of other programs including a free search engine associated with AdSense.
Google is probably already directing visitors to your site through AdWords why not profit from Google. After all, most of your visitors probably found your site through Google in the first place.
You can also look into similar programs being offered through other sites such as Yahoo and Bing. Please note that Google is the big dog in the business and the best way of generating some click income from your free site.
Another way to generate income is to put links on your noncommercial site that direct visitors to your business sites. People who find your informational site useful might be willing to spend some money with you or at least take a look at your products and services. Remind them that your business activities are what supports the informational site they find so valuable and if they want to support it they should do business.
There’s one thing that you might try and that is to accept donations through a program like Paypal. Simply set up a Paypal account with an e-mail then create a banner add that says please support this site. The banner ad could take your visitors to a page that asks for their donations to keep your site going.
This might be a great idea if your informational site is related to some sort of charity or non profit endeavor. You should only use the money to support your activity and you should be careful of tax laws governing charities if you do this.
You can also create an informational product related to your site and sell that. For example, pictures or photographs related to it. If it’s a hobby site maybe you could sell plans or recipes related to the hobby. Or you could create an e-book about the subject that you could sell to visitors. There’s no reason why your informational website can’t pay for itself.
